Subject: Re: [World] Company
Vehicles
Jodi,
I assume that you mean your employee will be driving a company vehicle
for work? Will he be using it to commute to and from home as well?
I have 8 trucks. Currently, 3 drivers, including myself are using the
trucks to commute. The drivers have to pay the company 14 cents a mile for any
personal use of company vehicles, including commuting. Every truck has a
mileage log and they have to keep track of all their mileage. We do random
checks on the logs to make sure no one is cheating. We know how far they live
from the shop so we can tell if they are using the truck for personal use
besides commuting. We don't mind if they do as long as it's not excessive. At
the end of every month, we bill them for personal use of trucks. Some sign an
authorization to deduct their estimated personal mileage from their weekly
paycheck.
It's good to get a sign permission from all employees to get their
driving record from the state. Check the rules for your state. That way, if
someone has a bad driving record, you can choose to not have them drive
your vehicles. We are having driver problems now and it can get expensive.
make an appointment with your insurance agent and discuss the variables so you
can get the best package for your needs. I hope this helps.

We are having an employee take over a company vehicle this
spring. What is a good method when giving a company vehicle to an
employee? Do we pay mileage? Do we pay a car allowance per month? What
are others doing and what has worked best? Any suggestions that you
have learned not to do would be helpful too. Thanks all. This groups
is the best!
