Gary,
My comparison was over a year ago.
I bought some Rhodes at Lowe's and I had some Professional's Best from ABC
 Home Depot also carries it).
I have found that more oil came out of the center of the pad which I had cut
in half. If I used the outside end of the pad there was less problem with
oil residue.

I have tried washing pads in rubbing alcohol and even brake cleaner. The
latter dries very quickly but it takes a bit of it and it smells bad for a
while. Do not use it over asphalt! The alcohol takes a while to dry. Pure
alcohol might work better. I could clean a whole bag at once with some
denatured alcohol and let it dry on my dashboard in the sun.

I found the white scrubber to be much less effective dry than the wool,
however, I do use the white pads wet sometimes. There is also a blue
synthetic steel wool pad. I found it to be ineffective dry but satisfactory
when wet.
I prefer to use my steel wool dry. I would like to get some brass wool but
have not found a source.

So, did I read that 000 and 00 wool do not scratch glass? is that used dry?
