Re: [World] advice on a broken grille

Date Fri, 23 Nov 2007 15:28:09 -0500

A customer called me up the other day after we cleaned all of her exterior windows and the one large window above her door in/out back in June. Apparently the grille on the large window fell down and broke last week. There weren't all of the proper clips on the window which wasn't mentioned, however she is calling me 5 months later. She said its in about 20 pieces which probably wouldn't help with wood glue. She faxed me over an estimate for a new grille from home depot for $600!!!! I can't believe a wood grille costs that much. The job was $250, I was wondering what the professional thing is too do. I don't feel we are to blame especially 5 months later but my guys didn't inform her of the lack of clips. I was thinking of a few options. 1) Refund the cost of the job. 2) give her some money. 3) Find a place to get it much cheaper at least. 4) Nothing, it happened 5 months later most likely because she didn't have enough clips, and how do I know she didn't do something by accident and is trying to get me to eat it. 5) Use my insurance assuming they would even cover it.

Any advice is appreciated. Anyone with any information of other places to get wood grilles as well.

Sincerely,

Fred Hodge

Hi Guys and Gals, After learning the hard way! We never use a homeowners
rats nest of lights any more. Not put away neatly, broken lights, messy
strings, blown fuses, OLD, Head ache and lots of lost time. When we are
doing work for a customer, we sell them a package deal that includes new
light strings, installation, and take down. We custom design the lights
for each customer and we store the lights in our warehouse. Much happer
for all concerned and MUCH better profit.

Phil,
There is plenty of good training material out there. I recommend a
company called Creative Decorating ( www.creativedecoratinginc.com) for
training dvd's, materials, etc. You can get a complete package from
them
that should get you up and running for about $1500 (of course you still
have to
buy the inventory, lights, cords, etc,). Also, many Christmas light
distributors will have free or relatively cheap training dvd's or
e-books
available. I think if you are organized you could easily break 100k in
your 2nd year if you have 2-3 crews going and promote the business
throughout
the year.

There are several others on here who do a good business with holiday
lights. Hopefully they will chime in.

By the way, the next issue of AWC magazine is doing a feature on holiday

lighting that should have plenty of good info.
